The Alma is British Land’s first Build-to-Rent scheme at their landmark Aldgate development in London. One of my first projects at TFP, it was delivered in collaboration with Woods Bagott and British Land, with a focus on both apartment and amenity FF&E.
We were tasked with designing and developing key pieces across the scheme. For the apartments, there was a strong emphasis on UK/EU production, balancing design ambitions with budget requirements. The package included bespoke lounge chairs, sofas, coffee tables, and TV units. A highlight was the coffee table — a refined mix of a slim reeded glass top with mirror backing, set within a metal frame and edge.
The amenity spaces, though compact, were designed to be highly functional and characterful. The standout here was the Alt-Rock Table in the co-working lobby, made from a striking composite of marble and pigment cement with large marble fragments — a bold alternative to terrazzo or solid marble.
Overall, the collection of pieces demonstrated how premium quality could be achieved through careful design, materiality, and manufacturing choices.
This project was part of a body of work at The Furniture Practice
